The phrase is mentioned only in John's gospel.
So did Jesus love John more than the other disciples?
No, Jesus loved all his disciples equally.
But John was practising the consciousness of His love for him.
John constantly had a sense of how loved he was by Jesus!
And in his own gospel it was mentioned 5 times! (Number of Grace)
Let's take a look at the places where this appeared:
1) John 13:21-24
21After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me."
22His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means."
Peter didnt ask Jesus directly but asked John instead, cos' he knew that John was close to Jesus.
When u practise the Lord's love for you there is intimacy with Him.
2) John 19:25-27
25Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," 27and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
John was at the foot of the Cross ministering to the Lord at a time when He most needed comfort.
When u practise the Lord's love for you you'll be at the right place at the right time, fit for the Master's use.
3) John 20:1-4
1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" 3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
John outran (or overtook) Peter as they ran towards the tomb.
When u practise the Lord's love for you there will be (spiritual) progress.
4) John 21:4-7
4Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
5He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?"
"No," they answered.
6He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
7Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!"John was the first to recognise that it was Jesus!
When u practise the Lord's love for you there will be quick discernment.
5) John 21:19-20
19Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!" 20Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?")
John followed Jesus without even being asked.
When u practise the Lord's love for you you will be led of the Lord, sometimes even unconsciously!
Isnt it awesome!?!
Let's learn to boast not of our love for God but His love for us!
That will take us to places we never dreamed possible! :D
Ephesians 3:20
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us
